ALTERNATIVE NARRATIVES: Reimagining Armenian Folktales with Generative AI

As the Lab Leader, I designed the curriculum and directed the Alternative Narratives result-oriented lab in collaboration with TUMO Labs and the Art and Technology Center.

Over the course of a month in Dilijan, Gyumri, and Yerevan, I worked with students aged 13 to 18 to reinterpret Armenian folk tales — The Speaking Fish, Brave Nazar, Anahit, and Artsakh — using Generative AI.

The lab focused on visuals, animation, sound, and composition, ending with a public showcase. I guided the students through concept development and storytelling, navigating challenges like keeping character consistency in AI-generated narratives.

The goal was to inspire these teenagers to explore the potential of generative AI tools for both visuals and sound—and to merge that with the motion graphic and editing skills they already had. The theme of the Lab was Alternative Narratives, inviting them to reflect on the richness of Armenian culture and how to preserve old tales for future generations, especially from regions recently affected, like Artsakh. This project became a meaningful way to keep the culture alive—reviving traditional stories through the creative lens of the next generation.

While the content produced during the labs is currently not available to the public, the project itself was a unique fusion of traditional storytelling and cutting-edge technology, offering a fresh perspective on celebrating Armenian culture.
